2008 Reading List
Currently reading:
Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Tolle, Eckhart. A New Earth.
Have Read:
Bowers, Kenneth E. God Speaks Again.
Chopin, Kate. The Awakening. (And other assorted short stories).
Graff, Gerald and Cathy Birkenstein. They Say; I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing.
Hills, Rust. Writing in General and the Short Story in Particular.
Nafisi, Azar. Reading Lolita in Tehran
Ruiz, Don Miguel. Mastery of Love. Finished this one. Elementary language (although, I think it’s actually translated), elementary principles of bringing yourself into a relationship. Sometimes the simplest things are the most easily forgotten. There are times when I feel that he as a writer (again, perhaps a translation issue) “dumbs down” what he’s saying and I feel insulted, but his simple examples do tend to put things in the proper perspective.
Rumi. The Essential Rumi. Translated by Coleman Barks.
Shakespeare, William. Henry VI Parts I, II, and III. (Although I skated by not having read part III). Joan of Arc, a woman ruling from a Queen position, a spiritual King (who otherwise is neither strong nor smart). Good play. Infinitely better than Richard III.
Toth, Emily. Unveiling Kate Chopin
To Read:
Gilbert, Elizabeth. Eat, Pray, Love. One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia. (I’ve started this but can’t get into it)
